At DECHEM studio, we believe that true craftsmanship is not only about creating beautiful objects but also about making a meaningful difference. We are more than just a glass design studio — we are dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment, society, and culture. We incorporate social responsibility into each aspect of our business process, and take special care to make sure our products are both aesthetically pleasing and sustainable in multiple ways.
Environmental Sustainability
Long - lasting Material
Glass is a highly sustainable material. Although it is not a purely natural material as it needs to be manufactured from soda, lime, and silicate, its waste has minimal impact on nature. Glass is non-toxic, making it both eco-friendly and safe to use in your home. The lack of toxins also makes it easy to recycle glass, as it will not release any harmful chemicals into the environment when it is broken down. Glass can be recycled and reused over and over without losing its original quality or durability. Unlike alternative materials such as plastic, it is not single use and can retain its form for years, or be reused to make new products. Residual glass from our products is remelted in the furnace for future use.
Eco - Friendly transportation
We prioritize the environment with every order by using eco-friendly packaging. We utilize biodegradable paper and minimal dyes, ensuring that our packaging breaks down naturally and reduces environmental impact. Although we have to use plastic materials in some shipments to protect our glass products, we are working everyday towards completely biodegradable packaging. When shipping throughout Europe, we partner with GLS Group to reduce the environmental footprint of our product transport. GLS is moving towards all electric shipping vehicles to eventually reach zero-emission shipping. Additionally, they strategically plan shipping routes to use the least energy and preserve the environment. Overseas, we ship with UPS and FedEx, which all place sustainability at the core of their business practices, investing in alternative energy sources and utilizing electric vehicles. We ensure we are working towards sustainability in each step of our supply chain, all the way until our products reach their final destination.
Energy - Reducing lighting
For our lighting products, we always work with LED bulbs. LED lighting is not only long-lasting but also highly efficient and environmentally friendly. Unlike traditional bulbs, LEDs contain non-toxic materials, making them a safer choice for both your home and the environment. Furthermore, LED bulbs can be up to 80% more energy efficient than fluorescent bulbs, which means they use significantly less electricity to produce the same amount of light. By choosing our LED lighting products, you are investing in a durable, eco-conscious solution that leads to a decreased carbon footprint.
Care and keeping of your purchase
You can be part of the sustainability process by caring for your product to ensure longevity. In order to enjoy your DECHEM product for many years, it is important to clean and care for your glass. We recommend regularly dusting your glass, and cleaning with warm water and gentle soap or mild glass cleaner when needed. If you have any concerns about caring for your glass, we are always happy to answer your questions and help keep your product looking its best.
Social Sustainability
Partnerships
We value collaboration with other environmentally conscious businesses, recognizing the importance of collective responsibility in preserving our planet. When putting our products in stores, we actively seek partnerships with companies that share our commitment to sustainable practices, ensuring that every step of our supply chain aligns with our values. Additionally, it is a priority at DECHEM Studio to support local Czech businesses. We source all of our metal and electric materials through Czech producers. Every aspect of our products are locally sourced and assembled.
Community
We work on many projects with other Czech glass makers, photographers, designers, and more. We are always looking to connect with people from both the local and international design collective. For example, when artists could not connect in-person during COVID-19, we started a project called “Bandaska Through the Lens”, in which we sent photographers around the world one of our Bandaska vases in exchange for artful photos of the vase in the photographer’s signature style. This program allowed us to capture the essence of our vases through different perspectives as each photographer put their own personal spin on the photoshoots. It is important to us to give back to our community, whether through sharing a space with other designers, outsourcing flowers for our showroom to a local supplier, collaborating on a product, or conducting galleries with other local artists.
Cultural Sustainability
Preserving culture
Traditional Czech art is at the heart of our products. All our pieces are made directly in the Czech Republic, so we take special care to honor the culture of Czechia while creating functional products. Czech handmade glass production, a part of the UNESCO World Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2023, is both a vital part of Czech history and an important tool in everyday life.
Sharing Knowledge
Through exhibitions, collaborations, and outreach programs, we display and teach about our Bohemian glass products and what goes on behind the scenes. In the collaborative exhibition “Breathless”, DECHEM Studio demonstrated live glass blowing, presented finished products, and even taught glass-blowing classes. At Milan’s “Salone de Mobile”, we showed pieces that represented the different Czech glass-blowing techniques and manufacturing methods. Through each new project, we prioritize sharing the beautiful Czech culture and cultivating the time-honored practice of blown-glass in a contemporary manner.
