Dechem Designers Michaela Tomišková and Jakub Janďourek tell a sophisticated story about materials, traditional production techniques and lyrical forms through their hand-made glass products. Partners in both work and life, Michaela and Jakub founded Dechem studio in Prague in 2012 after gaining extensive experience in design and production. They were able to merge both these aspects and create one of the leading Czech design studios and brands that provides a full range of services, from designing to selling their own products.

The core of the studio’s work is thus not only the design and creation of glass products, but also a mastery of production technology and respect for craft and tradition. The studio creates unique light fixtures, lighting objects and graceful, decorative items using traditional Czech techniques for preparing, gathering, shaping and blowing clear and coloured glass into wooden and metal forms. The glass is then finished with centuries-old techniques, like snapping, grinding and firing, and decorated by the most experienced craftsmen by engraving, cutting and painting.

The designers, however, advance all these traditional techniques through a thoroughly modern approach to design that places emphasis chiefly on grace and minimum shaping. This approach allows the specific optical and colour qualities of the material to shine through. They often work with gradient and a broad spectrum of pastel and brighter colours. The preference for materials in their natural form – such as raw brass, copper and iron – is reflected in the appearance of the light fixtures.

One of the studio’s most successful products is the Bandaska collection of vases from 2015. The legendary French company Ligne Roset included some of these vases in its own collection. In addition to making its own creations, Dechem works for other brands and customers. Since 2014, it has been working with KAVALIERGLASS, a glassmaking company, for which it created a collection of borosilicate light fixtures. The studio is currently working with the Czech brand BOMMA on the successful Phenomena lighting collection. Dechem makes regularly appearances in renowned, professional magazines, has exhibited in Milan in the Rosanna Orlandi gallery and has taken part in the London Design Festival, for example. It is also a winner of the Czech Grand Design award.
